Give source research a clear starting point

For SEO, digital PR, and content teams investigating sources.

  1. See which sources appear

Review cited pages and domains in your monitored answers. Use source categories and ownership filters to distinguish your content from competitors and third parties.

  2. Check the surrounding answer

Open the response to see how a citation is used. A source beside a recommendation gives you context to investigate, rather than proof of why the model chose a brand.

  3. Choose a page or outreach task

Review an owned page for missing details, check inaccurate third-party coverage, or investigate a source cited for competitors. Monitor later citations to assess changes.

Questions and answers

What is a citation in an AI answer?

A citation is a source linked or referenced in a captured response. Cleotic keeps it with the question and assistant that returned it. A citation does not reveal training data or prove why an assistant chose a particular answer.

Do all assistants show their sources?

No. Citation availability varies by assistant and response. You can still read the answer and inspect brand mentions when no citations are provided. The citations shown are not a complete record of everything an assistant may have used.

Are citations the same as backlinks?

No. A backlink connects one website to another. An AI citation is a source presented in a specific answer. Backlink counts and citation frequency measure different things, so a page can perform differently on each.

Can I get my page cited?

There is no guaranteed placement. Review which pages assistants already cite for your buyer questions, then check whether your own content answers those questions clearly and accurately. Track later responses to see whether your pages appear.

What can I do about a source I do not control?

Read the page and check how it describes your brand. If something is wrong, request a listing update or contact the publisher with the correction and supporting evidence. Use accurate competitor coverage as research for your own content.
